The first batch of electric jeepneys will be rolled out in Metro Manila by the end of the month, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board said.
LTFRB member Aileen Lizada said they received the first application for permit to operate e- jeepneys under the public utility vehicle modernization program.
At least 60 units purchased from the Changan automobile company will be initially deployed by the PM Jeepney Drivers and Operators Services, Inc. who applied for a new Certificate of Public Convenience (CPC) to operate modern PUJ service with LTFRB.
In the application signed by its head Obet Martin dated March 1, the group requested the board for a franchise to operate at least 15 units each on the routes of SM Masinag in Antipolo City to SM Fairview in Quezon City via Batasan Hills; Cogeo in Antipolo City to Market! Market! in Taguig City; Manila City Hall to Quezon City Hall; and Gateway Mall in Quezon City to Malolos, Bulacan via North Luzon Expressway.
LTFRB member Ronaldo Corpus said these routes are “developmental routes,” or routes where there are no PUVs.
“Ang developmental routes ay yung mga ruta na walang dumadaan na PUV kasi fixed route sila. Pwede lang na may overlap na maximum 25 percent nung length ng mga existing routes,” Corpus said.
He added that a maximum of 15 omnibus franchising guidelines-compliant units can be deployed by an operator for a single route but it could increase if there is a demand and if the operators can provide the supply.
Corpus said that the units are expected to travel their routes once the CPCs are issued by the end of March or first week of April.
If the board failed to release the CPC by that time, Corpus said the board might issue special permits on the units to benefit the riding public with safe and convenient travel.
“Talagang OFG-compliant na itong mga units nila. Sa gilid na yung pintuan, may charging area bawat upuan, and may Wi-Fi na pwede mong magamit. Techy na sya talaga,” Corpus said.
The applicant shall submit the proposed fare matrix which will be evaluated by the board.
