THE Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) expressed interest to manufacture electric vehicles (EVs) as it unveiled on Tuesday night a charging station for such vehicles, dubbed as e-Vehicle Power Station.
“Our job goes beyond the traditional task of providing power. RP has got to develop its own niche. We in Meralco will help propagate local manufacturing of EVs. We are prepared to invest and set up financing. We don’t want to import these vehicles,” Meralco Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan said.
Meralco President Oscar Reyes said each charging station costs P1.5 million. “The structure is existing. We just sort of dressed it up,” he said.
Meralco Senior Vice President and Head for Customer Retail Services and Corporate Communications Alfredo Panlilio said the first e-Vehicle Power Station may be put up in Mandaluyong City. “What we launched is just a prototype. It’s a pilot for our own research and development. We will look at the demand. We’re just testing the technology,” Panlilio said.
“This technical pilot is meant to give a signal to EV stakeholders that Meralco is readying itself to support the industry’s requirements. It provides a test bed for Meralco’s business-case premises and technical competencies in providing different charging technologies,” added Panlilio.
Meralco will assist in making the EV charging technology available to interested partner-companies and priority sectors, like public transport operators. Panlilio said Meralco will be ready when the market for e-vehicles becomes ripe and stakeholders start adopting the technology.
“Meralco will be there to meet the demands and requirements for this environment-friendly initiative,” he said.
The EV charging station also features Meralco-designed charging equipment. Initially providing regular charging technology, it caters to the practical needs of its future customers, specifically those serving mass public transport, like the electric tricycle (e-trike) and electric jeepney (e-jeep) that buy fuel on a retail basis and usually gas up on P50 increments.
