Secretary's Message

My warmest greetings to everyone to the Department of Energy portal! I commend the visitors for their interest in what has been happening in the energy sector.

In continuing global development efforts, energy will play a very important and major function in sustaining economic growth for accrued human capital development. Being the most dynamic region in the world today, much is expected to happen in the Asia-Pacific in the coming years.

In the next two (2) decades, the energy requirement in the region will increase by 2.0 percent while actual energy production will expand by only 1.5 percent. Striking a favorable balance between the two is imperative in order to avert a potential power shortage. Reforms are underway to provide power to the widest coverage; affordable power to every Filipino.

Our Energy Independence Agenda are anchored on the energy sector goals of achieving 60 percent energy self-sufficiency by 2010 and the effective implementation of reforms in vital energy industries. These reforms will subsequently guide the Filipino consumers to make informed choices and expand their economic horizons in a milieu that will be free of distortions.

This agency; the DOE believes that access to energy is instrumental in actually eliminating poverty and promoting social equity. It is, perchance, an equalizer to the growing gap between the rich and poor. Furthermore, being able to provide energy is an empowering tool in aiding development.

We will lay down the foundation for the future generation of Filipinos to ensure that they will also benefit from the convenience and the comforts that we currently experience. It is in this regard, that we maintain and implement energy policies which have environment connections in affirmation of our commitment to sustainable development.

The challenge ahead of us is indeed colossal and for this reason, we remain steadfast in our commitment of providing the required policy and programmatic support mechanisms to ensure that energy facilities, products, and services are delivered adequately, ecologically safe, and at affordable means.

Consistent therefore with our over-arching theme: the Department of Energy with its attached agencies is all geared up, motivated and driven to fuel the Philippine economy through greater access to energy!
